Theater Review : Jay and Silent Bob:The Aural Sects Tour @ Lincoln Theatre

DERRICK DUNN

The day after the Super Bowl, the nation's capital was ready for some laughs as Jay and Silent Bob: The Aural Sects Tour stopped at The Lincoln Theatre.

As opposed to a traditional stand-up show, the renowned laid-back stoners from New Jersey took a laid-back spoken-word performance style. Over the last three years, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith have appeared as their famous slacker characters in eight movies. As a longtime fan, I was looking forward to the live performance, which enabled the duo to move beyond their film characters and share personal stories from their lives.

I entered the venue and was greeted with a pre-made hip-hop list and a laid-back environment. Promptly at 8:05, Mr. Smith appeared on stage to thunderous applause and shortly thereafter introduced his longtime friend, Mr. Mewes. Out of respect for fans, I will try to keep my spoilers free and not reveal many of the jokes that were told.

It's often said that The four basic rules of jokes are timing, rhythm, rule of threes, and material. While Smith has this down to a science, he's never claimed to be a comic. From the moment Smith sat at the table on stage, his craft as a storyteller pulled the audience. One of the best bits of the night was his journey as a vegan visiting a "White Castle" to try their Impossible Sliders.

Smith shares his experience of meeting a fan who attended a theater buyout he organized to promote Ben Affleck's film Changing Lanes. During their conversation, the fan opened up about his divorce and drew parallels to Affleck's recent separation. Kudos to Smith as well for reflecting on his own mental health struggles and paying tribute to the late, great Shannen Doherty.

Mewes highlights came not from abundant cannabis-themed humor all night but witty insights into parenting mishaps and relationship challenges while working in the filmmaking industry. I also commend Mewes for his unwavering commitment to maintaining his sobriety.

Smith also announced a third "Jay and Silent Bob" film that is about to start shooting and fans; we also saw a touring show to celebrate "Dogma" now that he has the rights back. As the night began to wind down, a lucky fan from the audience was invited to participate in a live recreation of Smith's popular comic series "Quick Stops: Anecdotes From the Annals of the Askewniverse."

"The Aural Sects" tour was a fun night out that kept me smiling as an

inseparable duo shared their stories and made everyone feel like a friend.
