Two iconic characters join forces in the 34th Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, "Deadpool & Wolverine." Shawn Levy directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, the film's star, Ryan Reynolds.
Six years following the events depicted in "Deadpool 2", Wade Wilson (portrayed by Reynolds) now leads a tranquil existence, having forsaken his former life as the mercenary Deadpool. He continues to maintain an amicable rapport with Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Peter (Rob Delaney), Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna), and Shatterstar (Lewis Tan).
When Mr. Paradox (Matthew Mcfadyen) of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization operating beyond time and space constraints to oversee the timeline, enlists his involvement, Wilson is thrust into a new mission that unfolds with unexpected twists. In the face of an existential threat posed to his home universe by Cassandra Nova (Emma Corin), Wilson joins forces, albeit reluctantly, with an equally hesitant Wolverine on a mission with far-reaching implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
"Deadpool & Wolverine" wastes no time in kicking off the fun. After a six-year hiatus, Reynolds confidently returns to the role, showing he hasn't lost a step. Whether it's the fourth-wall-breaking, humorous commentary, or ass-kicking, Reynolds is having a blast, and the audience is right there with him. One of the things I must comment on the creative team is the arc they give Deadpool. While we've known him to be bold and confident, the latest film allows him to show his failings and doubts.
As for Mr. Jackman's Wolverine, he has a similar arc to Deadpool's. "Logan" was the perfect coda for his character, but the way writers bring him back is handled with tact, and longtime fans of the character, the brutality his character has this go round. Jackman has portrayed this character for over twenty years, and he still seems fresh. The returning supporting cast delivers the usual acting styles from the previous and new cast additions. Emma Corrin has an all-out vibe as Cassandra Nova, easily making a formidable foe for our two heros.
Naturally, the big question on everyone's mind is, how are the cameos? All I'll say is they are worth the wait, and one, in particular, earned my biggest smile since Black Panther's return in "Avengers: Endgame." I encourage viewers to avoid spoilers as much as possible and see the film with a crowd. If I had one gripe about "Deadpool & Wolverine," some theories and rumors don't happen.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" masterfully combines the nostalgic tone of an '80s buddy cop film with cleverly integrated Easter eggs, intense action sequences, and a barrage of R-rated humor. The surprising cameos throughout will elicit applause, and I can confidently say that the MCU is back on track, reassuring fans of its former glory.
Final Grade: A
