For this week's Slow Jam Saturday, I want to take us back to 1993 and pay homage to the R&B trio H-Town and their track "Knockin' Boots for Christmas." The group was already enjoying success with the two singles from their debut album, "Fever for Da Flavor," released the previous spring. Thus, it made sense for them to appear on their label's Christmas project.
"Knockin' Boots for Christmas" is a remix of the group's signature song with a holiday twist. In the song's intro, the group announces, "Once again, we're doing this one for all the ladies. Except this time, it's Christmas. Ho-ho-ho, baby."
In the first verse, the late Dino Conner sings, "Well, last night I thought back, thinking about Christmas Day. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and now I want that old flame back. Laying down by my open fire, doing everything my girl wants and desires."
While the instrumentation is a bit different, "Knockin' Boots for Christmas" is still a sensual R&B track that celebrates the act of making love. Hearing the lyric at age forty-three, I can easily relate to the message that depicts a desire to rekindle a past intimate connection and engage in passionate lovemaking with your partner, especially if you've been away on a business and haven't seen them in a while.
"Knockin Boots For Christmas" shouldn't work as well as it does, but if Luke's goal was to emphasize the importance of physical pleasure and intimacy in a relationship during the holiday, the mission accomplished.
Final Grade: B+
