Jagged Edge, an Atlanta-based R&B group, has returned to the music scene with its new single, "Just Might Get It. "This marks the inaugural release from its forthcoming album, "All Original Parts, Vol. 1." The ensemble, consisting of twins Brandon and Brian Casey, Kyle Norman, and Richard Wingo, has been influential in the music industry since its debut album, "A Jagged Era," was released in 1997.
Brandon and Brian serve as the lead vocalists and play a central role in the production and songwriting of the new single. This track engages with the longstanding idiom, "be careful what you wish for." However, upon listening to the song, I noticed one significant concern: the excessive use of auto-tune. I endeavored to maintain an objective perspective as a fan of the group.
In "Just Might Get It," Brandon and Brian strive to present various scenarios; however, the execution does not coalesce effectively, primarily due to the distracting auto-tune. Furthermore, the chorus lacks originality, which compounds the song's shortcomings. Although dating dynamics have evolved since the group's initial release, they appeal to the contemporary trap R & B audience rather than staying connected with their original fan base.
Considering that each group member is approaching the age of fifty this year, it would be prudent to develop a sophisticated and mature song that addresses the complexities of dating in one's late forties. Such a composition could explore themes relevant to a cougar or a silver fox eager to impart the true art of seduction to a younger partner.
While I haven't been particularly impressed with a Jagged Edge album since "JE Heartbreak II," knowing the group's talent, I hope they can find the magic again.
