When you think of '90s R&B, UNV is remembered for their iconic hit "Something's Goin' On," which secured their place in the genre. Years later, J. Poww, UNV's lead vocalist, continues to celebrate their legacy while embarking on his own solo journey. I recently spoke with him about his new solo project.
1. Reviews & Dunn: What can you tell listeners about your new project, "I Did It My Way"?
J Poww: It's a cover album that showcases my interpretations of ten classic number-one songs. As a bonus, I've also included five original tracks.
2. R&D: How did you decide which songs to cover for the project?
JP: I selected some of my favourite songs by artists I admire.
3. R&D: Did you personally contact any artists you paid tribute to on the project for their approval?
JP: We contacted every artist. I needed their blessing before I proceeded, and I was happy to announce that everyone had signed off.
4. R&D: One of the songs you cover on the album is "It Never Rains in Southern California" by Tony! Toni! Toné. We recently lost D'Wayne Wiggins from that group. Did you ever cross paths with him during your touring days in the early nineties?
JP: One of the first concerts I ever attended was Tony! Toni! Toné! so it was a must that I reach out to the Wiggins brothers. Getting the ok from Raphael and D'Wayne before he passed was a blessing.
5. R&D: "Straight From My Heart," the second single from your debut album, isn't getting enough attention. If Kendrick Lamar and Drake reached out to you for sample clearance, who would handle it better?
JP: The melodic sound of Drake might be a better fit, but I would never underestimate the greatness of Kendrick Lamar.
6. R&D: I recently celebrated my 17th wedding anniversary, so I have to ask how often fans approach you about the wedding ballad "So in Love With You," written by the legendary David Foster from your second album.
JP: I still receive requests for "So In Love with You, " which was also on our second album. I don't know if you remember the "Somethin' for the People" group, but they wrote and produced "Sunshine." Both songs continue to be very popular choices for weddings.
7. R&D: Do you have plans to release your next project, Soulful Memories, this year?
JP: Yes, we anticipate releasing that album around July 4th with our current record. However, for touring purposes, the primary focus is "I Did It My Way" since everyone enjoys singing along with familiar songs.
8. R&D: Is there anything else you want to add, and where can fans find you on social media?
JP: First, thank you for letting me return to your platform to chat. I appreciate it. Fans can follow me on Instagram and TikTok at @jpowwofunv. On Facebook, they can follow J: Poww Music and my page, John Poww. For booking inquiries, please get in touch with Allen Gordon at 313-544-0769.
