"Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" delivers as a another enjoyable heist flick

Writer and director Christan Gudeggast reunites with Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. for another heist in "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera." Since getting the best of Big Nick (Butler), Donnie (Jackson Jr.) has relocated overseas and has linked up with a new crew. On the other hand, Nick sees better days and still hopes to get revenge.

Nick seizes an opportunity when Donnie's most recent job draws the attention of the FBI in the United States. He travels to France, and upon reuniting with Donnie, he proposes a deal rather than apprehending him. The two individuals subsequently become involved in the perilous realm of diamond theft and the notorious Panther mafia, as they devise an ambitious heist targeting the world's largest diamond exchange.

From the outset, it's important to highlight that this second installment takes its sweet time; some may argue it lingers too long. While the first film raced straight into action, this sequel opted for a more gradual approach. Aside from a brief fight sequence in the opening act, there's not much excitement in the first half. Gudegast's decision may disappoint viewers accustomed to seeing Butler exhibit his typical alpha male swagger, especially given its excessive two-hour and twenty-minute runtime.

However, this choice works naturally for the film, allowing our two leads to demonstrate their authentic chemistry. I commend the screenplay for avoiding overused buddy clichés typical in many films from the '90s. Moreover, we clearly understand why Nick and Donnie must join forces, adding a layer of sophistication to the film. When gunfire finally erupts in the third act, it's satisfying enough that it feels worthwhile after all that buildup.

Nonetheless, the sequel is not without shortcomings. The supporting characters mostly fall into familiar stereotypes and are underutilized. Additionally, while both "Den Of Theives" films share similar runtimes, this one suffers slightly from pacing issues—some swift edits could have made it feel tighter.

All things considered, though, the sequel fully embraces its identity, and if box office results are any indication, this likely won't be our last encounter with Donnie and Big Nick.

Final Grade: B

"Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" is in theaters now.
