Concert Review : Killer Mike & The Mighty Midnight Revival at Kennedy Center


On Tuesday, May 21st, the Kennedy Center Stage witnessed a unique fusion of hip hop and spirituality, led by Grammy-winning activist Killer Mike. This extraordinary performance was a collaboration between Killer Mike, The Mighty Midnight Revival, and the National Symphony Orchestra. The concert showcased new arrangements from Killer Mike's acclaimed album "Michael," all under the direction of Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke.


The evening began around 8:20 with the band treating to an orchestral arrangement of the A-Town anthem "Neva Scared." As the singers took their place on stage, Killer Mike made his way to the stage with unbrushed confidence and kicked the evening off with a one-two punch of "Down By Law" and "Shed By Tears." The energy continued as Mike entered "Live Forever" and other selections, including "Kill Jill."


After a brief intermission, the show's second half kicked off with "Can't Stay Strong," which featured a smooth transition into "Run." Backed by a stellar Orchestra, the show's second half was a masterclass in hip-hop artistry. Mike's flow was impeccable, his delivery flawless, and his connection with the audience was not just palpable, but electric. 


From hits like "Young Love," "Rich Song," and "Reagan," every song was delivered with energy and enthusiasm. However, the lively rendition of "Neva Scared" had the crowd not just jumping, dancing, and singing along, but feeling a part of something bigger, united in their love for the music.


Killer Mike's concert was a powerful platform for social commentary and thought-provoking messages. It was more than just a display of musical talent; it was a call to action.
