Concert Review : KEM: Home for the Holidays Live with the National Symphony Orchestra

The soulful sounds of the holidays were on full display Wednesday, December 11th, when Kem performed the first show of a two-night residency. Joined by the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Tim Davies, the Platinum-selling R&B sensation offered an enchanting evening filled with holiday spirit. The performance featured new interpretations of beloved Christmas classics from his acclaimed album "What Christmas Means."

At 8:15, Kem took the stage dressed in a suave green suit and began his set with a cover of the standard "Christmas Time is Here." Kem made the song his own by singing the track with a natural flair. Other standards of the evening included "We Three Kings," "The Christmas Song," and "My Favorite Things all of which were met with cheers from the attendees.

As a fan of Christmas music, I truly appreciate when an artist releases a Christmas album featuring original songs. Those who have listened to Kem's Christmas album know the magic he brings. Selections performed at the concert included "What Christmas Means," which emphasizes love as the core theme, indicating that a genuine grasp of Christmas transcends physical presents and encompasses deeper emotional and spiritual meanings, beautifully enhanced by the orchestra.

Additional songs from the album were performed, including "A Christmas Song for You," where Kem evoked powerful feelings linked to treasured memories and lasting affection, implying that the enchantment of Christmas lies not only in the celebrations but also in the close bonds we nurture with our loved ones. My favorite evening moment was when songstress Ledisi joined Kem for the sultry duet "Be Mine for Christmas." Kem then took a brief break to do a wardrobe change and gave Ledisi some shine as she performed a well-received rendition of "Give Love on Christmas Day.

Returning to the stage in a dapper white suit, Kem gave the audience another gift by performing his classics. "Love Calls" was up first and easily won the audience over. "You're On My Mind" and "Share My Life" also sounded elegantly lush life, but it was the closing number, "I Can't Stop Loving You," which gave the singer a chance to show out vocally.

The night concluded with "Merry Christmas Baby".

It's always a joy to see an R&B artist being backed by the National Symphony Orchestra, and with Kem as the featured talent this go-round, it was a wonderful early holiday gift.
